Former director of housing dies
Brian Platt, who had worked as director of housing for a number of councils in London and Essex, and as a board director at architectural firm Hunters, has died aged 63.
Mr Platt started his housing career aged sixteen as a clerk in the housing department in the then county borough of West Ham. He remained at what then became the London borough of Newham for 21 years, apart from a brief spell at Hackney council, and left in 1984 to become director of housing at Chelmsford.
He was involved in evacuating and arranging temporary accommodation for families from Ronan Point when the tower block partially collapsed in 1968, and was one of the pioneers of estate regeneration resident consultations.
From 1996 to 1998, Mr Platt worked as a housing consultant before becoming a board director at Hunters, where he worked with housing associations and developers on affordable housing schemes. He retired in 2009.
His colleagues at Hunters said he would be ‘sadly missed’ and that they had never heard a bad word spoken about him.
Sue Magyar, board director at Hunters, said: ‘He was a very supportive figure, particularly towards the more junior members of staff, who he was keen to share his extensive knowledge with.’
Mr Platt passed away yesterday afternoon at the Royal London Hospital following a stroke last Thursday. He leaves his wife, Barbara.
