With greatest respect to the family in this tragedy, although the family 'did not receive guidance from Southwark Council on using the window' it is clear that Mr Peddie knew what the correct guidance was - and gave it to his family - ie don't open the latch because there are young people in the house'

    (apologies for repeating myself)

My area - in inner-city London - is a mix of council housing and 'top-end' flats.

So, the way it works is that the FULL market rent for Right-to-Buy council houses that are bought and privately let would be about 80% of the overall market rent (because the market says its less desirable to live on an estate).

And as for this sort of rent being affordable for the sorts of people who rent through the local authority. To coin that great London phrase 'You're having a laugh!'

One of the biggest problems is that the word 'affordable' is used in the planning and development process to describe shared ownership and other sorts of houses for people on family incomes up to £60k pa.

This is Way Way out of the league of many people round here - some of whom would struggle to get any kind of mortgage, particularly nowadays.
