Lakanal delays concern council leader
The leader of Southwark Council has expressed concerns about the length of time being taken to investigate the fatal fire at Lakanal House last year.
Peter John has written to the coroner ahead of a pre-inquest hearing this afternoon saying residents are ‘very anxious to understand what caused the tragedy last year’.
Six people died when fire spread within the Lakanal House tower block on 3 July 2009.
Mr John said concerns have been heightened by a recent fire at the Marie Curie high rise, a sister block to Lakanal House on the Sceaux Gardens Estate.
In a statement on the pre-inquest hearing, Southwark’s deputy leader and cabinet member for housing Ian Wingfield said the council understands it is a ‘challenging and complex investigation’.
But he added: ‘My officers have been working hard to give every assistance to the police and we would welcome any action that the coroner can take to bring this to a swift conclusion.’
