Council tenant to pay back £10k in benefits
A Lewisham Council tenant has been ordered to pay back £10,200 in benefits to which she was not entitled.
Noora Sharif, 32, of Deptford, south east London, claimed housing benefit and income support without declaring she was being paid for part-time work at a community centre.
At Bromley Magistrates’ Court Ms Sharif was ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work and repay the money fraudulently claimed. She was also ordered to pay £200 in costs at the hearing on 12 September.
Ms Sharif was prosecuted by Lewisham Council following a joint investigation with the Department for Work and Pensions.
The council also revealed that earlier this year it successfully prosecuted a woman who used a false passport in order to get a council home she was not entitled to.
Funmilayo Bolumole Ore, 54, admitted using false documents, including a passport, NHS card, bank statement and a Home Office letter stating she had indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
Ms Ore pleaded guilty to offences under the Counterfeiting and Forgery Act 1981 and was jailed for four months on 3 August.
