Tenant to be evicted for behaviour of partner
A housing association has won a possession order against a tenant as a result of crimes and anti-social behaviour committed by her partner.
Northampton County Court ruled in favour of Riverside yesterday (1 May) against tenant Donna Thurman, 25, finding that as the tenancy holder she was responsible for disturbances around her Leicester home caused by her partner Darren Michael Bennett.
Mr Bennett had been arrested for drugs offences, and for threatening behaviour towards neighbours and police officers. In December 2010 he was given an eight week suspended prison sentence for a public order offence, and placed on a curfew.
He had also been convicted of fraud and handling stolen property in September 2010 after a stolen car was sold from the property, in the West End area of Leicester. He was given a two year community order and supervision order with drug rehabilitation for 12 months.
Ms Thurman, who lives at the property with her two-year old daughter and Mr Bennett, will be given a date by the courts when she will be evicted.
Paul Jones, assistant director of operations at Riverside, said: ‘Our tenants need to be aware that they are responsible for the people that stay at their homes and if they use the home as a place from which to commit acts of anti-social and criminal behaviour they will be brought before the courts.’
