Would be good to see Inside Housing getting into the details of this story and go much deeper than the anodyne statements from the two organisations. Something has clearly gone wrong here - let's find out the facts. They could tell a story with far-reaching implications for the sector.

This story has two figures for the number of empty homes in Glasgow - 2,000 and 5,000 - which is it?

We have been hearing this from politicians for years. Where is the evidence that pension funds wish to invest in meeting the country's housing needs? What is Plan B, because I think it will be needed!

Probably most private landlords wouldn't have a problem with longer tenancies e.g. 2-3 years if the following could be included:
    - probationery tenancy for first 6 months (i.e. tenancy could be ended at landlord or tenant request)
    - speedy means to end failing tenancies (arrears or ASB) i.e. possession within 2 or 3 months at longest
    - lenders' approval to any tenancy regime changes - this is key - without lender approval, we could go backwards in terms of numbers of people housed in private rented sector

Housing organisations should try to press criminal charges. Also, only supervised "hostel type" accommodation should be offered next time, until they have repaid the cost of the damage and proved they can sustain something. Where there are very few consequences, this behaviour will continue. If mental health issues involved, then is mainstream housing the right place?
