Social housing registrations up by 2,000
More than 2,000 extra social homes were registered between February and April than in the same period last year, according to the latest National House Building Council statistics.
The figures show there were 10,512 registrations for social homes in the UK, an increase of 27 per cent on 2009.
The largest increase was in the west midlands, which saw 1,145 public sector homes built compared to 467 last year - an increase of 145 per cent.
There were also large increases in the north east (an extra 224 homes, 124 per cent) and in London (736 homes, 82 per cent).
Registrations fell in Merseyside by 40 per cent to 136, in Wales by 29 per cent to 340 and in the north west (by 12 per cent to 565). There were smaller decreases in the east midlands and northern Ireland.
The total number of registrations in the UK, including private sale or rent, was 31,007 - a significant increase on last year’s figure of 17,992.
