Surveyors call for swift return to council-led building
Plans to encourage councils to build social homes must be taken forward quickly, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has warned.
The professional body urged the government to move swiftly to tackle the slowdown in the house building market, which it said is likely to see the number of new homes built in 2009 fall below 80,000.
Housing minister Margaret Beckett announced a consultation yesterday on plans to make it easier for councils to build social homes. Measures include allowing local authorities to keep all the rent from properties, and revenue generated under the right to buy scheme.
James Rowlands, policy officer at the RICS, said that although any measure to boost housing supply is welcome there are questions over the ability of local authorities to deliver development programmes that need to be addressed.
He added: ‘This is one step towards maintaining a basic level of house building and retaining skilled workers in the industry.’
