Scots raise house building grant rates
Scottish social housing grants are to be increased by £4,000 to £5,000 a home, to keep housing associations building through the recession.
The Scottish government is to increase the average housing association grant by 6 per cent, with immediate effect. The new grant rates will apply until the end of 2009/10.
Cabinet secretary for health and wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon said the government would ‘continue to do all we can to increase the supply of housing in these challenging economic times’.
She continued: ‘We have listened to concerns from housing associations and have made changes to housing association grant assumptions.
‘This will ensure that we continue to maximise the number of new homes built, increase the likelihood of meeting the 2012 homelessness target and deliver value for money for the public purse.’
In England, the Homes and Communities Agency is offering associations ‘flexibility’ on grant rates, but has consistently declined to announce across-the-board increases.
