Fire destroys four floors of tower block

A fire has destroyed the top four storeys of a council-owned block of flats in Kingston, as terrified residents were taken to safety.

Twenty fire engines, two aerial ladder platforms and around 100 firefighters were called to the fire in a tower block on St Peters Road, Kingston upon Thames at 4.47pm on Monday afternoon. All residents were evacuated with no casualties reported.

The fire affected the top four floors and roof of the 14 storey block, which contains 60 flats. The fire was brought under control at 8.55pm by fire crews from stations across London.

Residents were evacuated and taken to nearby Piper community hall where a rest centre was set up by Kingston Borough Council.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated by fire investigation teams and the police. A woman was arrested in connection with the incident on Tuesday morning, but as yet has not been charged.
