NHF chair hits back at Shapps’ pay attack

The chair of the National Housing Federation has criticised housing minister Grant Shapps for his attack on housing association chief executive pay.

Matthew Taylor used his opening address to the NHF annual conference in Birmingham yesterday to defend the sector, stressing that associations offer value for money.

‘No one can match the innovation, dedication, value for money and capacity of our sector,’ he said.

Mr Shapps has been highly critical of the salaries paid to some housing association bosses, and later used his speech at the conference to renew his attack on those earning more than the prime minister.

Mr Taylor, who stood down as a Liberal Democrat MP at the last election, said just before he came to the conference he had seen the press release issued by the minister.

‘It is not about building more homes or quality of services to our tenants but about the salaries of a few chief executives,’ he said. ‘The truth is I don’t believe there is a single chief executive of a housing association that could not earn more in the commercial sector.

‘Our staff don’t get the salaries and perks of MPs but they do deliver the homes and the transformation of lives that MPs and this government know is so desperately needed, at a cost no one else can match.’

In his speech Mr Shapps said housing associations should publish details of their expenditure.

He also cited Inside Housing’s chief executive salary survey, which shows 52 housing association chief executives are paid more than prime minister David Cameron.
