The housing association branch of public service union UNISON is consulting its members over which candidate for the Labour leadership they believe has the best housing policies.
The 1,100 members who pay the voluntary political levy to the Labour Party will vote by postal ballot over the summer. They will also be asked to choose a Labour candidate for London mayor in 2012.
John Gray, branch secretary and Labour link officer, said: ‘They must point out that there is an alternative to cutting new building amidst a massive housing shortage and slashing housing benefit for the poor. The candidates who best address the housing crisis will win their votes.’
The decision on whether or not to make a supportive nomination will be taken by UNISON’s national Labour link committee on 21 July. The decision on the London mayor will be taken by the London regional Labour link committee today.
