NI minister reverses plans on Travellers
Councils in Northern Ireland will not take responsibility for Travellers’ sites as originally planned, the minister for social development has announced.
Margaret Ritchie said she was reversing a decision to transfer responsibility for managing and providing Travellers’ Transit Sites to local councils. The Northern Ireland Housing Executive will continue to manage the sites.
The Northern Ireland Local Government Association, which had lobbied against devolving responsibility to councils, said the decision would ensure Gypsies and Travellers would have a central authority managing their housing needs.
