Ironic in light of todays news that bullying happens at No 10. Unfortunately I am not surprised. Since the outset of the " business" mentality in public services, the aim has been to do the job faster and at less cost (fewer staff) and the pressures have fallen on front line staff to achieve targets. These management heroes who achieve, bear a remarkable resemblance to those hedgefund managers who everyone tolerated or ignored until their real motives of greed and self advancement nearly destroyed our economy.
Shame too that in public service the real costs are to some of the most vulnerable service users.
Deeply worrying that none of the political parties came out to say the bullying culture is unacceptable so we can expect more of the same whoever wins the election

I have long thought the 'business model' and public service do not make ideal partners. Sure there is a need to ensure value for money, remove poor practices that have sometimes made it appear that services are run for staff rather than clients and to encourage third sector involvement in the provision of services.
Rather like the destruction of our manufacturing base by the Conservatives, New Labour have taken the 'Hammer to crack a nut' approach to public services. If you prioritise efficiency and effectiveness you must cut cost ( reduce staff, close expensive service outlets etc etc) and this means a reduction in service levels to some of the most needy in our society ( there is such a thing Mrs T !!)
What really sickens me is todays headline about No 10 will cause much chest beating and cries of unfair, however come the election, whoever wins, the bullying management practices will continue in the name of efficiency, at huge cost to front line service providers and clients
