05/06/2009 | By Tim Leunig.... This is a great article, and I agree with it. You omit that there arerports Uddin and husband have a mansion in Bangladesh, done with Italian marble... However more than being an argument against social tenancies the article is a strong one for abolishing the House of Lords at the very soonest. People like Uddin should not have a job for life, and a good one, at the people's expenses... It is right for richer people to pay more in taxes, but maybe rather than messing up the system with a nightmarish scenario of evictions etc. the very simplest thing to do is to have an entry in the tax form asking whether the taxpayer is living in social housing. If he/she is and the income is above a certain level, than it would be Inland REvenue to tax him/her a certain amount (the rent increase to whatever level decided for those able to afford to buy a home) which would be passed on to the Housing Ministry or some other body to be used to build new social homes. I do not think you would find a more genial solution anywhere.
