Of course job cuts & economic woes are going to affect regeneration.
Just consider why those neighbourhoods are there in the first place? They served as accommodation for workers in the coal mines, the steelworks, the ports & the manufacturing industries. Without these employers the area would have remained rural.
Take away the employment base & you take away any chance of economic viability. Under funded regeneration initiatives & adding 1.3% to the job seekers allowance - it's like giving a sticking plaster to a drowning man.
Community programmes, capacity building & linked up support initiatives might make the trendy do-gooders feel better but what these neighbourhoods need is job, jobs, jobs. Proper industrial jobs with proper wages not minimum pay service jobs. Without strong action there can be no hope.
