Let me guess you got some land donated by the Council and lashings of cash from the Housing corporation and you pulled a rigged questionnaire on residents so that they gave the answer YOU and your masters wanted and then hey presto little nasty scotch common or concrete brick boxes everywhere with a panel of varnished wood on one elevation to tart them up.
Community will be a ghetto within 12 years and you can do it all again - your job is safe!
As far as a decimated industry goes - as a public cash wallah presumably you like to prop up all manner of uneconomic industries - tomorrow you might decide that the UK is the perfect place to grow bananas so you would get all the grant forms filled in and get a huge payout from the taxpayer to buy some land and some plants but also get the public sector to fund huge radiators and sun lamps (on susbidized electric and gas) and wee cosy jackets and electric blankets so you could provide the poor and deserving needy with delicious bananas.
Whereas i believe in the doctrine of comparative advantage and see this as not only unproductive use of land and equipment in the UK that would be best engaged doing something else that it was productive doing, at the same time i would see it as an unfair impairment on ie caribean and other tropical arguably poorer countries who could really do with access to our markets which would now be restricted to them.
Let Germany and Japan and China and India build our ships and cars and computers and fridges we can stick to doing what we are good at and keep looking for new things to do - it will go full circle soon enough - no point being worried about "lack of bleating"
