This government is cutting deep and especially where older people and the vulnerable are concerned. With adult social services and local councils responding by cutting services and increasing eligibility criteria for care fewer people will be in reciept of the support packages they require.
This seems very short sighted as those people who require low level interventions to sustain their independent living will not receive the support they need. So less preventative actions will take place which will ultimately result in more higher cost interventions taking place later on. This is in total contradiction to current government strategies to enable people to remain independant in their own homes and also to the quest to save money as resource requirements will increase.
At the same time smaller organisations who support the vulnerable are facing funding cuts, or just being cut and this means that adult social care cannot refer lower level cases to these agencies. Government plans do not seem to have been thought through and the social cost will be great.
The only bright light in this very grey landscape is that agencies are learning to work together more effectively to provide the support people need and there is more creative thinking going on so that resources are maximised - although this will not bridge all funding gaps.
Riverside housing association are working on an innovative project called LiveTime as a response to cuts in support services for older people and are 'Breaking The Mould' with their offering to their cusotmers. The project aims to support older people by addressing basic needs such as financial inclusion, affordable warmth etc; looking to engage people in activities to combat isolation; promotion of a healthy life style and intergenerational work within communities.
Some of our projects will seek to bridge gaps left when organisations have had to reduce their provision or where they have closed due to lack of funding.
We are working with community centres, schools, care and support agencies, other housing associations and local councils to deliver holistic support packages and we welcome on board other partners to work together to achieve positive outcomes for older people.
