Where do we draw the line? The public aren't calling for rioters with jobs to be fired. Why not? Are they somehow more noble than people on benefits? All this does is hold up a mirror to the values of our society.
I bet many of the people who signed the petition calling for benefits to be withdrawn think the rioters are all unemployed.
Some of them may well be, but the logic there is similar to saying, 'I know several drug addicts. They all have long hair - therefore all drug addicts have long hair.'
Then the public calls for a law to ensure that everyone has a haircut, and voila! No more drug addicts to worry about. Sounds silly? To me, the logic is very similar.
I abhor riots, but I think there are limits. Surely the courts should dish out penalties, rather than the Government trying to pandar to popular opinion without thinking things through.
