F451, Scotland is not a particularly socialist country. As a whole it tends to be a little left of centre overall, but quite a few commentators think that theSNP are really a slightly curious mix of left leaning social policies mixed with a rather more conservative/free market approach to finance.
The union - such as it is - will be finished within a decade. No great shame there. In reality it will make no difference to freedom of movement within the UK and, as now, anyone who wishes to make a sensible contribution to Scotland's future is of course not only welcome to move here but would be welcomed themselves.
Rick - essentially, yes. Two ways of solving that:
1. Independence - then we're in charge of our own tax raising, borrowing and spending.
2. Full fiscal independence (Home rule as the Lib Dems call it, or Independence lite) - err, see (1) - not really any different.
I'm intrigued by F451's idea that English Counties could secede from England and choose to be governed by and a part of Scotland. Bring it on - I'd put in a bid for Somerset myself, lovely people and a great part of the world. C'mon cussins, load up your tractors with Cider and join the revolution...
