While I agree with quite a lot of this article, the author as many others seems to equate riots with young people... The fact is that the riots were not "students on holidays with nothing to do" riots... If is debatable that at least 50% of rioters were adults, ie over 18... And the riots covered age groups that went up to sixty years olds and maybe above that... The reactions I have witnessed from adults was that many of them would be rioting had they been fit enough to do so to engage in running and facing the police. As for the looting many adults did not participate into it simply because they realised they would not be quick enough to nab the stuff as the youth got there faster and polished off everything... This kind of social upheaval would never happen from a youth iniative. The riots were started by adults, but obvioulsy once the youths got into it their enthusiam and sheer physical energy took over and left the adult rioters behind as bystanders.
