Solar photovoltaics are an expensive luxury amongst renewables particularly at domestic scale.
The FIT started by the previous government is a waste of taxpayers' money and benefited few that could afford the investment up front. Also solar potential in the northern latitudes including much of the U.K is pretty poor even if positioned carefully, which most domestic PV installations don't..
Whilst energy resources are limited and we will soon face high costs - need to look at a mix of sources and drastic reduction in consumption vis heat recovery, better insulation, etc, etc. Nuclear power is the immediate solution as potential for renewables - all technologies is limited and will only meet a fraction of the present consumption rate and also due to their intermittancy - which require large central stations for balancing.
