Council Housing Rents have been allowed to go up enormously by
6-7-8 % pa. , for the past 15 years, such that council rents have
trebled in that time. Now the tories are keeping these high rents
but cutting all sorts of benefits for poorer households. They are
imposing £18 Billion of benefit cuts onto these people in the near future,
including the bedroom tax which is going to cut housing benefits
by £490 million p.a ,and also council tax benefits which is being cut
by £500 million p.a,which means 670,000 council tenants are
facing a shortfall of £ 1 Billion p.a ,which they will have to pay
themselves out of their other benefits which are also being cut.
The tories said that by cutting housing benefits they then expected
landlords to reduce rents , but they are also telling councils to
push up their rents by 6-8% pa.Next , they also want higher rent
increases to pay off around £20 Billion of debt that is somehow
attached to these councils housing departments !!!
