Paddick has taken the annual estimate of the number of homes needed in London and multiplied by 10. He has no clue how he would actually deliver them. And his party, the LibDems, are part of a coalition that has cut housing investment by over 60%. No credibility at all.
Meanwhile Johnson crows about how many homes he has delivered. But these are just the completions of the homes started under Ken Livingstone's 2008-11 programme. The first year when Johnson and Shapps policies were in force has led to 56 - yes 56 in a city of millions - new affordable homes starting in the last 6 months for which figures are available. His future programme is nearly all the mis-named 'affordable rent product' at rents up to 80% of market - ie not affordable at all.
Livingstone hasn't put a figure on the future programme because no information has been made available about the 'affordable rent' programme - how many homes, where, and at what rents. Why it's so secret no-one knows but it might just be because there is an election imminent and Johnson has soemthing to hide. We know Livingstone will also build more council houses in concert with the boroughs and his record on building on GLA land is far superior to Johnson's.
On private renting, Johnson says he won't interfere with the market so that's extortionate rents for many years to come. Livingstone has a specific proposal to cut rents - and he will campaign for a Living Rent as well. http://redbrickblog.wordpress.com/2012/03/14/a-sector-crying-out-for-regulation/
I'd pay good money to go see Johnson at the Comedy Store, but at City Hall it must be Livingstone.
