Trying to bring this discussion back to Earth and out of the rarefied atmosphere of the political ionosphere, where Chris seems to reside most of the time...
Did anyone think to ask how many of the private landlords responding to this survey actually have tenants who are claiming housing allowance?
That figure needs to be known for the first sentence of this article to have any context, because most of those saying they have not been approached by the local authority might not have any reason to have been contacted about direct payments of benefit.
Stating percentages like this without adequate context is exactly the reason why the CORE lettings statistics have been picked apart by Migration Watch (remember the figures for Lambeth that claimed 86% of lettings went to British citizens, when actually the figure could be as low as 40% of all lettings because the CORE database does not include all their lettings?).
Come on, Inside Housing - you can do better than this. This is sloppy reporting. If I had been marking a student's work and he had reported statistics in this way I would have given him an F.
