Chris - " a different democratic arrangement is required"
I wholeheartedly agree with you on that one.
A different arrangement was offered by the Liberal Democrats through the AV referendum, but that was hijacked by a few rich and influential Conservative supporters who put out a blatantly false blizzard of propaganda through the "NO TO AV" campaign, which was even reproduced on the election flyers of our local Ward Councillors.
When I drew the attention of our local councillors to the false statements and misinformation issued by the NO TO AV campaign, and which they were helping to spread on their election literature, I was told that I was wrong.
I most certainly was not wrong, because it was untrue to say that under AV the votes for a minority party (the BNP was the example given, for obvious reasons) could be counted four or five times while votes for a major party like the Conservatives would only be counted once.
That was a blatant lie designed to convert people's revulsion at the BNP's policies into opposition to AV.
Unfortunately the Referendum was not regulated by the Electoral Commission and the presentation of such false statements as part of the campaign against AV was not something they could investigate and use to void the result of the referendum.
That is the kind of corrupt "democracy" we have in this country at the moment, and it most definitely needs to change.
