Thanks Richard, I have just heard the same news from the RLA.
It is essential that this is not scrapped. The tenant should have the choice when completing their benefit forms if they want the LHA element to go to the landlord.
There are too many horror stories of the benefit not being paid over as rent. This results in lengthy and expensive evictions that need not have been necessary.
There are a small number of LHA recipients who are honourable and trustworthy, however these are the minority. The temptation for the masses seeing a few hundred pounds go into their accounts is too much.
The cost to split the payment in the Universal Credit is very minimal to the government. The cost if they don't do it will be massive as so many landlords will NOT take LHA tenants and the need for emergency bed and breakfast type accommodation will rise sharply.
Lets hope that the government are reasonable.
I would still suggest that the petition is signed to show support.
