Comment on: Brit taxpayers should jump housing queue says MP
What a compounded tragedy this story has been produced the same day as the Norwegian anti-immigrationist and Mass Murderer goes on trial for his 'self defence' against multi-culturism.
Having read attacks against multi-culturism previously in IH, and the anti-immigration stance perpetuated by some posters, it is surprising that IH should court such comments again.
However, there is no surprise at Migration Watch's cynical sychronisation of their propaganda with the high profile murder trial where the crime was inspired by anti-immigration rhetoric.
Posters who complain at the contestment of xenophobic implications in their posts need to reflect on the Norwegian trial as evidence of where such views can lead - whilst those posters may be rational and more interested in the debate, they must not lose sight that others who are less rational may be spurred to act from their words. -
Comment on: Vulnerable protestors supported into housing
You could add to the irony, the actions of the World Bank to nudge China away from state ownership and allowing the tax-avoiding people-exploiting privateers to own more of its companies.
Yet the 'discredited' state ownership model has taken this backward economy to within a whisker of the largest most powerful economy on the planet, with banks and financiers queuing at its doors begging for loans.
Why would China wish to repeat the western capitalists' mistakes?
I echo the recognition of the good works carried out on the steps of our national icon of Christianity, and in the shadow of our national icon of greed and division. Time to turf the money lenders out of the Temple and all it's precincts, and for wealth to be the common means of all those who create it. -
Comment on: Margin call
Perhaps it is well over time to ditch Plan A for something that actually resolves the structural problems behind economic failure rather than simply penalises the poorest to raise funds to plug the gaps in a leaking philosophy.

Comment on: Rough sleeping in England up by almost a quarter
The extent of street homelessness these days in the UK is truly shocking. Blaming it on foreigners is dispicable, and the act of scoundrals. It is definately not the just position of a professional Minister to be so selective with the truth as to spread potentially nationalistic or racist hatred and thus promote abuse of the very people needing the most help.
Is there no formal agency that can take action to prevent such lowly behaviour from elected representatives? -
Comment on: Landlords call for cash to prevent homelessness
What has all this bile towards foreigners got to do with Landlords calling for more cash to prevent homelessness - and worse still, how does anyone manage to count 'descendents from immigrants' as being foreign?
Either someone is a foreigner or a native by birth, with the exception of Winston Churchill and Michael Portillo, oh and that nice Mr Howard person.
I'm amazed IH tolerates such persistant anti-foreigner contributions to what should be level debate. No wonder quality contributers are getting thinner on the ground.

In St Albans there are still some bargains to be found if you are young and don't mind sharing a toilet, bathroom, and kitchen, but for the older person or families it is going to be very difficult to find an alternative home to move to, and staying put and affording the bedroom tax is not really an option.
I can see parents having to sleep on the streets whilst the children are taken into social services care - where is the financial sense in this, let alone the moral family ehtic?

Social rents or fair rents?
Should the social rented sector continue to be subsidised, and if so what would be considered a reasonable rent?
Should subsidy be restricted to the land purchase and build cost?
Any other views on how the cost of housing should be met? -

Don't panic Sancho. A good idea is a good idea and there is no ideological copyright. Your credentials remain, if not enhanced.

True Joe, and this relates back to the point where so many items requireing expenditure from the housing account have been added as housing functions. There is a concensus from the contributors to this thread that such items need to be put back into the community budget, i.e. local or central tax funded.
If this was done with ASB then the civil authorities would definately want to take operational control back too, relieving the overburdened housing function to concentrate on housing matters.
I find Harry's informed viewpoint compelling, and as a result my own principled objection to ASBOs reduced. If they are to continue though, I remain in agreement with you that policing must return to the law and civil agencies set up to do so. -

Thanks Harry - your perspective is real and informative. I'm impressed by the view that the initiative is working. The press paints such a negative view, but I can accept that this is often far from reality.
This is one of the reasons I started this thread so that fact and opionion can be stated aside from the hyperbole.
A question area though. If an ASBO is applied to a family member living in private accomodation, would that family face eviction if they did not expel them from the home?
If they do not face the same sanction, is there a way to make the law equitable?
