Landlord offers cash payments to beat bedroom tax
A housing association is offering tenants with spare rooms thousands of pounds to downsize.
In a move which it says gives tenants an incentive to avoid the government’s bedroom tax, Viridian Housing is offering £4,000 to tenants with a spare room who move, £7,000 to those with two spare rooms and £10,000 for those with three spare rooms.
The government’s bedroom tax which comes into effect in April, will see an estimated 660,000 tenants hit by an average £14 reduction in their housing benefit. It reduces benefit payments for working age social tenants who are deemed to be under-occupying their home.
Joseph Brimpong, lettings manager at the 16,000-home association, said: ‘This incentives scheme has been developed to benefit our residents and help them move into a smaller home. We are continuously working with our residents to find homes that meet their needs.’
