Tenants evacuated as blaze hits tower block
A total of 130 people were evacuated during a blaze in a 22-storey tower block last night.
Around 40 firefighters from five different fire stations spent more than three hours battling the fire, in Swiss Cottage, north west London.
The blaze gutted a 17th floor flat and 130 people were evacuated to a nearby community centre for their own safety.
Firefighter Rod Horton said: ‘This was a big block of flats and at this time of night a lot of people were inside the building. Crews worked extremely hard to get the fire under control and to confine the fire to just one flat on the seventeenth floor. Thankfully no-one was injured.’
The fire brigade was called to the blaze shortly after 10pm and crews from Belsize, Kentish Town, West Hampstead, Paddington and Westminster fire stations attended, putting the fire out by 1.27am this morning.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
