As part of his New Years' Eve missive Grant Shapps said:

"As the country starts warming up for the 2012 Olympics, I want to be sure that no one has to wrestle with bureaucracy to be able to mark the occasion in style.

"So I'm today calling on communities to make it their New Year's resolution to get on the starting line and prepare for their own street games. And because all too often red tape gets in the way of these events taking place, I want councils to make it their goal in 2012 to high jump over regulations and fly the flag for those neighbourhoods wanting to take part.

"Hosting street games will both help towards securing an enduring legacy for London 2012 of greater participation in sport, and give everyone a chance to take part in a fitting tribute to the Olympics. I would urge councils and communities across the country to start planning now."

What games could there be - the removal van sprint, the handcart hurdles, the homeless dash?

What hypocrisy from the man who the very next day set out to oversee his Social Cleansing policy rolled out. But will the streets be clear enough of the 'underserving' poor to make way for his people to play in?

Of course there will have to be the old favourite - Pin the Blame on the poor and defenceless.

Maybe his fellow millionaires can partake in the penthouse stakes.

    The proposal was batty from the outset. More about media column inches than any real positive for housing, but then that describes the Minister rather well I think.

    I would tend to agree with you on this Jono. Indeed, from a Christian basis Jesus teaches that if you have something another person needs then you should give it to them, having faith that God will see to your own needs. This is not as silly as some may consider it in an ideal sense because if everyone behaved that way we would each be looking out for each others' needs and nobody would be left wanting.

    In some cases, departments could have been merged and several managers laid off, and the positions being advertised are for a single manager to oversee a wider area - so the picture may not be as simple as you make out.

    It has always struck me as a little odd how desparate the Blue People are to cling to the notion of subsidy as another hammer to beat tenants with - yet they refuse to digest the fact that the financial arrangement has now been reveresed, or to accept the fact that many other parts of life is subsidised, but because this supports private sector profit appears to be acceptable.

    The other side of these questions is - why were such matters not made clear before the ballot to chose the new landlord (or was there no choice offered, and no ballot taken - so tenants were just treated like so much cattle and sold to their new owners?)
