Dean: PSR is right - any form of rent control cannot work in the presence of short term tenancies. If we gave people "sitting tenants" rights, then it would work - but at a cost of scaring away a lot of landlords.

Joe: My solution is well-known to regular readers - allow more houses to be built. Unsubsidised market housing will suffice, as if we build enough of it, prices and rents will fall just as the cost of carrots fall if we have a bumper harvest. As prices fall, HB spending falls with it. I write columns about this from time to time, and then comments on this site lament that I have nothing new to say.

And as for the specsavers comment, well, that is the insult that has been hurled at me more often than any other over the years. Each to their own. I bought my glasses in 1991, and they seem to be a good strong pair of frames. I find them comfortable, and I am not vain enough to change them for fashion's sake!

Anonymous 2.56pm - as is well-known, I am a card-carrying LibDem. Does that affect this article?
    Best wishes to all readers!

Joe - I do - I am writing a paper on pension reform at the moment!

Joe - Glad you keep reading my articles, even if you don't agree with all of them. I don't think I have ever been accused of failing to hammer home my points before. Perhaps I am getting old!
