Career development is the focus in October for @CIHFutures, writes new chair @NGoodrichHsg #ukhousing

In his first blog as @CIHFutures chair @NGoodrichHsg explains what the group is planning in the weeks and months ahead #ukhousing

From the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) Human Library, to the hugely successful CIH Careers Week raising money for Women’s Aid with the Housing Cup and cutting the cost of CIH membership for under-30s to just £5 per month, it’s been a busy 18 months or so since we started out.

By the looks of it we’re not going to be slowing down much over the next year either.

October sees a whole month of activity focusing on career development.

We’ll be having guest speakers share their experiences and insights, and we’ll be providing a whole host of resources, stories and selected useful links to things we think you’ll love.

Additionally, we’ll be using our highly successful CIH Human Library events on Instagram to share how housing professionals can fulfil their potential; be it for self-improvement, aiming for that next job or switching your career focus.

Watch a video about CIH Futures’ Human Library series of Instagram events:

Elsewhere we’re going to be involved in setting up some great networking events, including the next Owning Your Future in London (1 November), which will focus on the Social Housing Green Paper. At our meet-and-greet event in Liverpool (15 November), people can share ideas, experiences and, most importantly, meet other housing professionals in a fun and relaxed environment.

Finally, we’ll also be getting involved in The Big Conversation in London in February 2019.

The previous Big Conversation events have been very well received, so we’re delighted to be part of its latest iteration.

Recently we’ve had a few personnel changes at CIH Futures – our founding chair Elly Hoult is moving on to take a place on the CIH governing board.

Although we’re sad to see Elly move on, she is a determined advocate for young housing professionals and a more inclusive future for UK housing.

We know she’ll do a brilliant job and wish her all the best.

We’ve also welcomed several new co-optees to the Futures board and we’re excited to see them getting stuck in. We’re always keen to hear any thoughts, ideas or areas of need from those early on in their career.

Several of our projects are still in the embryonic stage, but we’ll be making some big announcements as we move into 2019.

In the meantime, the CIH has a fantastic array of initiatives to help you make the most of your career, but we’re always looking to improve and always on the lookout for new input.

We’re also keen to get more volunteers involved in the events and projects we’re undertaking, so if you want to get involved just drop us a message either on Twitter or Instagram via @CIHFutures.
