I read with interest the story in the 25 June edition of Inside Housing about the Lakanal House fire in Camberwell.
Your Safe as Houses campaign, in the wake of several fatal fires in social housing properties, is to be applauded. It should help concentrate developers’ and housing associations’ minds about looking at safer forms of building materials. I advocate a greater use of steel.
Indeed, Inside Housing has reported the Chief Fire Officers Association as saying it was ‘increasingly concerned’ about the number and severity of fires in timber-framed buildings under construction after a fire in Peckham.
Rapid-build panellised steel systems, which involve off-site precision factory construction, also speed up the building process as well as reducing costs by cutting the construction time in half.
Fire safety and cost effectiveness are both vital to the future success of the UK’s social housing sector.
