Leaseholders objecting to a Southwark regeneration have backed down #ukhousing

The Aylesbury Leasehold Action Group has accepted a confidential deal from Southwark Council #ukhousing

Leaseholders on the estate withdrew their objections to the council’s planned Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) after reaching a confidential agreement.

It is understood that the inquiry into whether a CPO should be granted will still go ahead as some objectors still remain, but these leaseholders made up the bulk of those objecting.

Little detail was provided about the agreement, but a letter from Christopher Jacobs, a lawyer acting on behalf of the Aylesbury Leasehold Action Group, gave some background to the decision.

It said that the council had committed to review its rehousing policies, setting out “a range of amendments to its rehousing offer in relation to leaseholders affected by regeneration in its area”.

These amendments, according to Mr Jacobs’ letter, included “a mechanism whereby leaseholders could own 100% of a replacement property (subject to a charge)”.

The inquiry – led by a government inspector – is still ongoing. It was delayed after running over its allotted time and is scheduled to resume on 17 April and last another two weeks.

Steve Platts, director of regeneration at Southwark Council, said: “We are very pleased to have been able to reach an agreement with the Aylesbury Leaseholders Action Group withdrawing their objections to the CPO.

“This shows that the council has continued to communicate and negotiate with our leaseholders to reach an agreement throughout the process. A CPO is always our last resort and we would always prefer to find a solution with our residents.”
