Christopher Pincher announced as new housing minister
Christopher Pincher has been named as the new English housing minister and will take over from Esther McVey, who was sacked as part of the prime minister’s major reshuffle today.
The MP for Tamworth was confirmed as the new minister this evening and will become the 19th housing minister since 1997 – the 10th in the past decade.
Mr Pincher moves across from his current role as minister of state for Europe and the Americas, which he was appointed to in July last year. Prior to this he served as deputy chief whip. He has been an MP since 2010.

According to his voting record, Mr Pincher has voted to reduce housing benefit for social housing tenants, as well as voted against raising welfare benefits to be in line with prices. He has also previously backed phasing out secure tenancies and charging a market rent to high earners renting a council home.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government also welcomed Simon Clarke as the department’s new minister for devolution, levelling up and the North. Luke Hall retained his ministerial role as local government minister.

Ms McVey confirmed her exit in a tweet this morning, where she said that she was “very sorry to be relieved of [her] duties”. Housing secretary Robert Jenrick will stay on in the role.
