A London council has launched an independent agency for leaseholders of its homes.
Southwark Council’s cabinet approved plans for the agency in December 2015 after feedback sessions revealed issues with its service for leaseholders in the borough.
The authority hopes the new agency will improve leaseholder satisfaction levels, which currently lag behind that for tenants, and to resolve issues without lengthy tribunals.
All of the agency’s board members are leaseholders of homes owned by Southwark Council.
Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing at Southwark Council, said: “We listened to and recognised the unique concerns of homeowners in the borough and the extra, specialist support they need.
“This is why we pledged to set up an agency, independent from the council, with the relevant expertise to listen to and resolve their often complex issues. While in its early stages, I am delighted that the service has come to fruition and wish the team every success going forward.”
Through the agency, leaseholders will be able raise issues with bills, service charges and major works, receiving advice from agency officers.
