Wrexham Council has been told to rewrite its local development plan after the Welsh government said it should raise its 10-year target from 8,000 to 11,700 homes.

The council said that there could be a two or three year delay while it revised its proposals and conducted a new public consultation.

Lawrence Isted, head of community wellbeing and development at Wrexham Council, said the plan had ‘widespread community support’.

‘The council is disappointed that the Wrexham local development plan, which has undergone extensive public consultation and member consideration over several years has come to a halt,’ he said.

A Welsh government spokesperson said: ‘Wrexham were unable to provide the robust evidence needed [to support the plan] and have now taken the decision to withdraw the plan. Welsh government officials will continue to liaise with Wrexham officers to consider the best way of bringing forward a revised plan that addresses the issues raised by the planning inspector.’
