Sarah Sands, former editor of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, has been appointed as non-executive director at major house builder Berkeley.
The former editor of the Evening Standard and the Sunday Telegraph was yesterday announced as Berkeley’s new board member, and she will begin the role on 30 April 2021.
Ms Sands, who edited the Today programme from 2017 to 2020, is a board member at a number of other organisations including London First, a group that campaigns to support business in the capital, and political thinktank Bright Blue.
She was also editor of the Evening Standard between 2012 and 2017.
Her appointment follows the sudden death in June 2020 of Tony Pidgley, the founder and chair of the FTSE 100 builder.
Glyn Barker, chair of Berkeley’s board, said: “We are delighted to welcome Sarah to the board. Her appointment continues our programme to refresh the board by June 2022.
“Sarah is a highly respected journalist with a broad insight on economic, political and social matters and she brings a valuable perspective to the board on issues that are central to Berkeley’s vision and values, including in respect of the environment, sustainability, community and inclusivity.”
Berkeley is one of the largest house builders in the UK. Last year it reported pre-tax profits of £503.7m and delivered 2,723 homes.

Amid the housing crisis and with increasing demands on local authorities, developers and housing associations to deliver more homes, the Inside Housing and Homes England Development Summit brings together the public and private sector to collaborate towards the effective delivery of homes across England.
This is not a conference. It is a business meeting of decision-makers on delivery and how to build more quality homes.
