Government commits to publish Social Housing Green Paper by spring

The government remains committed to its promise to tenants to publish its Social Housing Green Paper by the spring, despite the minister overseeing it leaving his role.

The green paper – announced by housing secretary Sajid Javid in September – is supposed to be the start of a “fundamental rethink of social housing in this country”.

Former housing minister Alok Sharma had been travelling the country meeting tenants at ‘roadshows’ to gather evidence for the policy document.

In the course of these meetings he had promised tenants he would publish the paper by spring this year.

However, he was moved off the housing brief earlier this month in Theresa May’s reshuffle and replaced by Dominic Raab, with one roadshow still to complete.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government confirmed to Inside Housing that Mr Raab will attend that event in Basingstoke, and the government will honour Mr Sharma’s pledge on the timing.

A spokesperson said: “We are still committed to publishing a Social Housing Green Paper in spring 2018.
“The housing minister, Dominic Raab, will continue the tenant engagement work started by Alok Sharma and will be attending the Basingstoke event.”

The Basingstoke event will take place next Thursday and will be hosted by housing association Vivid.

A survey for tenants to complete about their views has been published online.
