New construction minister appointed

The government has confirmed the appointment of Nadhim Zahawi as the new construction minister.

Mr Zahawi takes over from Andrew Stephenson, who had only been in the role since 5 April but was moved as part of Boris Johnson’s reshuffle last month. He is the 17th construction minister since 2001.

Mr Zahawi’s official title is parliamentary under secretary of state, minister for business and industry at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

He is Conservative MP for Stratford-on-Avon, having been elected in May 2010.

Mr Zahawi had previously held a junior minister role at the Department for Education from January last year.

The construction minister’s responsibilities, as listed on the BEIS website, include delivery of the government’s Industrial Strategy, supply chains, local growth and sectoral lead on advanced manufacturing, materials, infrastructure and construction.

Caroline Grumble, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Building, said: “Construction is a key part of the economy, a driver of jobs and growth.

“The quality of our buildings has a lasting impact on the well-being of individuals and communities across all regions and sectors.

“We look forward to working with the minister to help ensure that the industry continues to thrive.”
