Homes England appoints director to lead new markets, partners and places directorate

Harry Swales has been appointed as the executive director of Homes England’s newly created markets, partners and places (MPP) directorate.

Mr Swales will take on his new role after almost five years at Homes England, most recently as director of products, equity and partnerships.

During this time Mr Swales’ team led on several high-profile investments, including Homes England’s joint venture with Japanese house builder Sekisui House and Urban Splash to build thousands of modular homes.

Prior to working in government, Mr Swales held a number of senior management positions in the private sector across real estate investment, corporate banking and development consultancy.

MPP brings together Homes England’s strategy, economics and engagement functions together with delivery specialists and local expertise.

Under Mr Swales the directorate will be responsible for providing new analysis and insight to support Home England’s decision-making, and will work closely with local partners to identify and develop tailored strategies for individual areas.

Nick Walkley, chief executive of Homes England, said: “Appointing Harry to lead MPP and join Homes England’s executive team is a great step forward for us as an organisation.

“Our new MPP directorate is vital to our work with local partners and how we drive new business development opportunities. I’m delighted to have been able to appoint such a qualified candidate.”

Mr Swales said: “I’m delighted to take on this role with responsibility for building a new part of the Homes England business.

“Our work with local partners is crucial to us achieving our mission and creating the capacity for a more resilient housing sector in this country.

“By combining strategic insight with our significant funding and development capability we will be able to develop greater understanding of the specific needs of different housing markets and work with our partners to focus resources and expertise to meet local housing ambitions across the country.”

Inside Housing is pleased to join forces with Homes England and the LGA to introduce the Inside Housing Development Summit.

Taking place on 27-28 April 2020, the summit will gather together local authorities, housing associations, developers, fund managers and advisors for a Chatham House style event focussed on making new connections and exploring new delivery models.

The summit will take place over 28 hours, starting with an afternoon plenary on 27 April, an exclusive development site study tour to Northstowe, England's largest new town since Milton Keynes, followed by a business dinner.

The second day will provide opportunities to network with a range of senior Homes England and LGA staff including Nick Walkley, chief executive of Homes England and Mark Lloyd, chief executive of LGA.

You’ll also meet with leaders from across the development ecosystem and take part in group discussions to help you connect and explore new opportunities. All accommodation and meals will be provided within the fee.

Places for each stakeholder group are limited to ensure a balanced mix of participants and to make sure you leave with the relationships and leads you need.
