Taylor Wimpey will offer NHS staff, care and emergency services workers a 5% discount on new homes this year #ukhousing

Taylor Wimpey becomes the first house builder to announce the reopening of sales offices following government plans to unfreeze the housing market #ukhousing

The discount, which is in acknowledgment of the role the frontline workers have played in the response to the coronavirus crisis, will apply to homes that are reserved in 2020 and will complete either this year or in 2021.

It comes one day after housing associations – including G15 members and Places for People – launched a campaign for a ‘Homes for Heroes’ programme to build 100,000 affordable homes for key workers once the pandemic is over.

Taylor Wimpey announced its scheme as part of a stock market update, which also provided details of the house builder’s plans to reopen sales centres and show homes from next week.

The update follows last night’s announcement by the government that it is putting an end to the freeze on the housing market in England by allowing estate agents to reopen and viewings to take place.

The Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish governments have confirmed they do not currently plan to reopen respective housing markets and is still advising that only essential house moves should take place.

Taylor Wimpey said the decision means it now expects to recall the majority of its sales staff from furlough by 18 May and the majority of other staff by the end of the month.

The house builder also confirmed that construction was now underway on the majority of its sites, following the announcement of plans for a phased reopening of sites at the end of April.

Last night the government also confirmed that local authorities were being encouraged to extend permitted site working hours.

Taylor Wimpey said this decision will help the organisation to reduce risk and limit the usage of public transport during peak times.
