A G15 housing association has apologised after charging residents in a block of flats for maintenance of a non-existent lift across nine years.
One Housing, which owns around 16,000 homes in London and the South East, promised to refund the 12 residents affected at its Belford Court block in Reading.
It charged an average of £27.38 per flat per year between 2010 and 2018, with each resident now owed up to £246.26 by the association.
A spokesperson for One Housing said: “We apologise for an error made when allocating costs for lift maintenance in previous year-end accounts at Belford Court.
“One Housing manages two blocks of flats at Belford Court, with one block of flats having access to a lift.
“There has been a historical misallocation of lift maintenance costs resulting in both blocks having been charged.
“We are now correcting this and will be contacting the residents who have been impacted and refunding them in due course.”
It is understood that residents were informed about the error in a service charge booklet for this year.
The G15 is a group representing London’s 12 largest housing associations.
