Morning Briefing: social rented housing has been eclipsed by the more expensive ‘affordable rent’ tenure #ukhousing

In the news

Newspapers across the country published by Reach – formerly Trinity Mirror – have focused this morning on the decline of social rented housing.

In a national investigation farmed out to local titles, papers from the Liverpool Echo, to Cambridgeshire Live, to the Birmingham Mail report on their local situation as far as social rented housing is concerned.

Meanwhile, the Brexit crisis rumbles on, with the I newspaper carrying a piece on how it will affect house prices.

According to experts interviewed for the article, not only would prices fall, but it might also be harder to get a mortgage if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, as banks could be less willing to lend.

This is just one of the issues addressed this morning in Inside Housing’s analysis of what housing associations are doing to stress-test for Brexit.

And this issue of Brexit is becoming more critical by the day, with The Guardian reporting that Theresa May lost another vote in parliament last night thanks to hard-line Tories in favour of ‘no deal’.

In the same paper, philosopher Julian Baggini argues that housing is one of the three key pillars to happiness, along with health and job security.

He takes issue with the way happiness is addressed in public discourse and puts forward a case for economic reform to improve people’s happiness.

Meanwhile, the BBC reports that a tower block of student accommodation in Bradford has been evacuated over “serious fire safety deficiencies”.

According to the BBC, concerns were raised about the lack of an appropriate fire warning system and possible dangers from the building’s cladding.

And finally, architecture magazine Dezeen reports that a housing block in west London is aiming to be the first in the city to accept delivery of packages by drone.
