MP slams charity's trustee appointment

An MP has written to a housing charity to express his surprise about a board of trustees appointment, due to the candidate’s housing record as a council chief executive.

Andy Slaughter, MP for Hammersmith, wrote to Shelter’s chief executive Campbell Robb about the appointment of Derek Myers.

The letter complained that during Mr Myers time leading Hammersmith and Fulham Council it ‘radically changed its housing rules, and introduced some of the most punitive housing policies in England’.

The letter stressed the difficult conditions that some of Mr Slaughter’s constituents are faced with, including having to live in ‘poor quality temporary accommodation many miles from the borough’ and temporary accommodation in the borough ‘infested with vermin’.

Mr Slaughter said that everything he has written about happened under the stewardship of Derek Myers, and that the appointment could ‘undermine the good reputation that Shelter has built up’ and will ‘reduce the effectiveness’ of their campaigning work’.

A spokesperson for Shelter said: ‘Campbell Robb has received a letter from Mr Slaughter and is in the process of replying to him. We’re not commenting any further at the moment.’
