Social housing tenants to be given free bike hire membership
Social housing tenants at an estate in west London are set to be given free membership to a bike hire scheme after a deal was struck with the local council.
Residents within the social housing element of the Copley Estate in Hanwell, which is being regenerated by Ealing Council, will be given free premium membership of Brompton Bike Hire service.
The new scheme will enable residents to hire bikes at the lowest rate of £3.50 per day without paying an annual fee, making it £4.70 cheaper than a zone 3 day travelcard for the London Underground.

Julian Scriven, managing director of Brompton Bike Hire, said: “One of the entry barriers to cycling is the economic outlay of the bike, so we are pleased to offer this service to those considering a bicycle for the first time and are perhaps put off by initial cost.
“We would like to invite local authorities to reach out to use to deliver similar or even more ambitious projects.
“To genuinely create a modal shift away from cars and toward cycling, we need to make cycling accessible to all.”
The Brompton Bike Hire scheme has 50 bicycle docks across London.
Julian Bell, leader of Ealing Council, said: “We believe this initiative will encourage the growth of cycling in the area and bring noticeable benefits to the local community, such as improving air quality and tackling climate change by influencing our residents to use sustainable modes of transport.”
