Grand Union Housing’s digitial inclusion officer tells us about helping tenants get online and what it takes to be a super-mum
What does your job involve?
I work with our residents, helping them to get online and improve their basic computer skills. This can enhance their opportunities to find work, save money and combat social exclusion. I work with all ages, ranging from school kids all the way up to a 97-year-old.
How did you get into housing?
After graduating from university, where I studied geography, I got a job at North Cornwall District Council and have been in housing ever since.
What would you change about the sector?
I’d like to raise awareness that housing associations are much more than landlords. We provide services that can really benefit people’s lives.
What’s the best thing about your job?
I love seeing the small outcomes that are directly making a difference in people’s lives. It could be someone saving money by shopping online or someone who has made great progress in becoming digitally literate.
And the most challenging?
It can be a challenge getting people to engage in the first place. There are still hundreds of people out there who could benefit from IT training, but we’re just scratching the surface.
What is your dream job?
I’d love to be a teacher one day. Teaching adults in my current role has stood me in good stead, but being a teacher is where my heart is.
What does a good day look like?
I love days when I am out and about, training tenants and directly making a difference. This is what I see my job as being about, not being stuck behind a desk.
How about a bad one?
If I’m stuck in the office I feel like I’m not making as big a difference as I could, but without this time the bigger projects I’m working on wouldn’t get off the ground.
What’s the first thing you’d do if you became prime minister?
I’d make it easier for housing associations like ours to build the houses that are so desperately needed. And I think I’d give everyone the day off!
What would be your superpower and why?
I’m a mum, so I have to have superpowers already to cope with two kids. But failing that, I’d want to be able to replicate myself and be in many places at once. Or to have powers of persuasion so everyone would come around to my way of thinking. I think this would work particularly well on my kids!
