Nikki Donnelly, resident liaison manager at Rydon, features this week.
I ensure the views and lifestyles of residents and local communities are taken into account when we are delivering our maintenance programmes or regeneration projects, which provide better new or refurbished affordable housing.
I was unsure what I wanted to do when I left school but knew I loved working with people. I started at Rydon and quickly found myself working with people from different cultures, ages and backgrounds, all with unique needs. This keeps the role fresh and gives me a way of having a positive impact on people’s lives.
From my very first project on the Ring Cross Estate near Caledonian Road in north London, I was able to make a difference by prioritising the replacement of windows in 300 homes. As I started visiting residents, I could see some were in greater need - whether it was families with young children or older residents - and I was able to advise the site manager on the best way to phase the work. I feel lucky to be meeting people every day and giving them news which genuinely impacts their quality of life.
Hearing how a culmination of different factors has left people in difficult situations. Housing, education, employment, health and well-being are all connected and it can be frustrating to see an issue from years ago have a lasting impact, which we can’t directly influence.
Building genuine, honest relationships with people. This could be during a consultation meeting or popping round for a cup of tea in their new home. Seeing the reaction from residents when you tell them that you can give them a new kitchen or bathroom suite, or even a new home, is incredibly rewarding and can make your day.
There are days when you meet people in real need but a combination of historical issues or personal factors outside their immediate housing needs limits what you can do to help them. Fortunately, I can work with site managers to prioritise current construction or repair work, which can make a difference.
I can do a fab dance routine to the classic song Simply the Best, complete with Tina Turner wig!
