Art editor @SonnyDhamu reveals his favourite Inside Housing covers of 2017 #ukhousing

A year in Inside Housing front covers #ukhousing

There was no shortage of dramatic and significant housing stories in 2017, which posed a challenge to our art editor Sonny Dhamu, tasked with coming up with magazine designs to convey the full significance of the stories.

Mr Dhamu picks his favourite designs of the year:

Our housing market is broken - 10 February

I love being playful with typography, be it on the cover or in features. This cover didn’t focus on one single news story, so it gave me the opportunity to use typography to make an impact.

Never Again- 23 June

Never Again- 23 June

The most challenging cover of this year. It had to be sensitive yet powerful as we launched our Never Again fire safety campaign. I feel I achieved that with a minimalist approach.

I was delighted when this cover won a British Society of Magazine Editors award in November.

Salary Survey - 29 September

It is not often that an illustration ends up on the cover due to time constraints.

This was commissioned for Inside Housing’s chief executive salary survey but I cropped it to make it work on the front cover.

The illustration itself is beautiful – really colourful and fun.

Grenfell: six months on

Grenfell: six months on

This was another full page design to mark six months since the Grenfell fire. Again, I took a minimalist approach to echo our Never Again campaign cover in June.

The photograph is mesmerising and almost haunting. It was a superb way to finish the year.
